Statistics show that a third of all vehicle accidents and almost half of traffic fatalities happen at night. Most of these are usually blamed on reduced driver vision.
That’s why it’s so important to make sure you keep your headlamps as clear and clean as possible. At night, our visual perception can be reduced by up to 70%, so you can imagine how much harder it is to see the road ahead if your headlamps are clouded over or hazy.
“Because virtually all cars now have plastic headlamp lenses, clouding is a serious problem, especially on older vehicles,” says Mark Feist, Product Manager at Permatex. “Over time, headlight lenses can become yellowed and clouded by the effects of sunlight, pollution, car wash chemicals, and road grit. This blocks the light output and reduces overall headlamp performance, cutting down the driver’s visibility.”
If your vehicle has cloudy headlamps, you have two choices: a headlamp replacement, which can costs hundreds of dollars, or an inexpensive lens restoration, which you can do yourself or have your mechanic do for you.
Permatex® has developed a special Headlight Lens Restoration Kit that brings back headlight clarity and performance. The kit is easy to use and comes complete with everything you need to eliminate lens clouding and restore the headlamp surfaces to ‘like new’ condition. Your light output will improve, and so will your car’s overall appearance.
Whether you’re a do-it-yourselfer or a professional mechanic, the job can be done in less than 45 minutes, without the need for special tools or training. You should be able to get Permatex’s Headlight Lens Restoration Kit at leading auto parts stores for about $13. If not, you can contact Permatex (877-376-2839, www.permatex.com) directly and they will help you find a retailer near you.
Once you have restored your headlamps, keep them clear by washing them often with a mild detergent and warm water. Do not clean the lenses with wax, polish, or any chemical that’s not made for the job.
Caution: This repair will not work on the inside of the lamp. If the headlight has internal damage, it should be replaced.
